Spalding Cycling Club Sportive

Sunday 7th March 2010

Spalding Cycling Club attracted over 50 riders, some travelling from as far away as Nottinghamshire and Sheffield , to it’s annual sportive event on Sunday 7th March 2010.

Sportive’s are a very popular type of event in Europe and are growing in popularity in the UK . They are a mass participation event on the public highway where riders on timed on predetermined route. The course is sign posted so riders do not need to worry about finding their way around. The event was not classed as a race and many riders entered simply to enjoy a moderate tempo ride with friends on quiet country roads. Others entered to challenge themselves to set a fast time or used the event to train for the forthcoming racing and time trial season to make up for time lost following the bad weather of recent weeks.

The event start and finish was at the Long Sutton Library and riders were given the opportunity to choose between two routes. The Sandringham route was a short, 60 mile ride heading through the royal estate in Sandringham before returning to Long Sutton. Alternatively, the Nelson route was much longer at 90 miles and took riders all the way to Burnham Market in north Norfolk and back.

Weather conditions for the riders were ideal with very little wind and despite a cold frosty start, the sun soon burnt away any icy patches on the roads.

One or two riders were unlucky enough to suffer punctures after the recent bad weather had left patches of gravel on the road but most riders made it back to Long Sutton without incident.

Feedback from those taking part was very positive and many enjoyed riding the signposted route and have vowed to return next year!
